Jets Giving 3 1/2 Against Dolphins

NFL News - October 27th, 2009 - Written by Scott

nfl logoWhen the Miami Dolphins rallied to beat the New York Jets in a memorable Monday Night Football game three weeks ago, it appeared that the balance of the AFC East had begun to shift. The Dolphins were up. The Jets, well, not so much.

New York did everything it could to win the game, scoring two go-ahead touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But it couldn't stop the at-times overwhelming Wildcat offense perfected by Miami, and eventually succumbed to it's glory, 31-27.

But it's a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league and now that Miami has dropped it's last two games, it's the Jets who come into the rematch with momentum. With it, comes the honors and they are favored at home, according to BetUS Sportsbook , by 3 1/2 points. The over/under is 41 1/2.

It will be a match-up against the NFL's top two rushing teams. The Jets are averaging a league-best 5.1 yards per carry resulting in 1,294 yards. The Dolphins are right behind with 4.8 per and 1,022 yards. They are the only two teams in the league to break the century mark.

The Dolphins beat the spread in their last contest against the Jets, but have not fared so well in the past. They are 4-13-3 in their last 20 meetings and are 3-3 ATS this season.

But against common opponents, Miami and New York have mixed results. Miami beat the Bills to claim their only other win of the season, while the Jets lost an overtime heartbreaker in which Mark Sanchez was picked five times. Both lost to New Orleans, but the Jets allowed a mere 24 points to the highest-scoring offense and kept the offense out of the end zone. The Dolphins, however, blew a three-touchdown lead against the Saints and surrendered 46 in the loss.

Both teams are showcasing relatively young quarterbacks. Sanchez has been up and down in his inaugural season, throwing four more picks than touchdowns. But he has been fairly good in important games, including a win over division-leading New England. He was efficient last week in a 38-0 drubbing of the Oakland Raiders. He completed nine passes for 143 yards and a score, and simply managed the offense that was led by 264 rushing yards from Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene. As a matter of fact, the rushing attack has been terrific in New York lately. Jones has 340 yards over the last two games, and Greene ran for a career-high 144 yards against the Raiders.

But it didn't come without a price. Second-leading rusher Leon Washington broke his leg in the win and will miss the rest of the season. Players on the field said the broken right fibula was visible on the field.

Miami's signal caller, Chad Henne finally had his rookie moment last week when he threw two interceptions, both returned for touchdowns, that proved to be the difference in the game. He made a star out of Brian Hartline, however, who led the team in receiving yards (94) for the first time in his career.

The Jets have allowed 48 fewer points than the Dolphins this year, and are 2-1 at home. Miami is 0-2 on the road.
